Howelsen Hill: Where Olympic Dreams Take Flight Guide

Welcome to Howelsen Hill Ski Area, a legendary landmark in Steamboat Springs and the oldest continuously operating ski area in North America! More than just a ski hill, Howelsen Hill is a training ground for Olympic hopefuls and a beloved community gathering place. Its iconic ski jumps and challenging slopes have shaped generations of skiers and snowboarders. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a beginner, Howelsen Hill offers an unforgettable experience. Howelsen Hill boasts a rich history dating back to 1915 when Norwegian immigrant Carl Howelsen built the first ski jump. He envisioned a place where skiers could train and compete, and his dream quickly became a reality. The ski area has hosted numerous national and international competitions, including Olympic trials. It has also produced more than 100 Olympic athletes, earning Steamboat Springs the nickname "Ski Town USA." At Howelsen Hill, you can ski or snowboard on a variety of slopes, from beginner-friendly runs to challenging black diamonds. Take a thrilling ride down the iconic ski jumps (for experienced jumpers only!). Enjoy night skiing under the lights. In the summer, the area transforms into a park with hiking and biking trails. The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club offers lessons and programs for all ages and abilities. While not directly related to the ski area, Steamboat Springs is known for its hearty mountain cuisine, including delicious steaks, game meats, and craft beers.
